Pitt QB Mason Heintschel named Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year semifinalist
Injured Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel is one of 20 semifinalists for the Witten Man of the Year award as the 5-2 Panthers head to No. 1 Miami.

Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel's season ended early because of an injury, but he is still collecting honors. The sophomore is one of 20 semifinalists for the 2026 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award, WPXI reported. He is the only sophomore on the list and one of seven players from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The award is in its 10th year. It was the first college football honor built mainly around player leadership, and community work weighs heavily in its selection. Heintschel's main project is "Have a Heart," a campaign supporting the Heart Institute at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He started it in memory of Lukas Mason, a childhood friend whose organ donations saved six lives. WPXI reported that Heintschel has taken part in 19 community service initiatives and logged more than 32 volunteer hours. He also made the 2025-26 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
His football résumé is also strong. Heintschel became the starter as a true freshman in 2025 and threw for 2,354 yards and 16 touchdowns. Pitt went 6-3 in his starts, and he was a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. This fall he completed 98 passes for 1,304 yards and 14 touchdowns before a season-ending injury in Week 5. If he wins, he would be the second Panther to take the award, after defensive lineman Deslin Alexandre in 2022. The winner's university receives a $10,000 contribution to its athletic scholarship fund from Witten's SCORE Foundation. Three finalists will be named Dec. 15, and the winner will be announced March 11, 2027, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The nomination doesn't change Pitt's depth chart. It does show what the Panthers lost when their starting quarterback went down, both on the field and in the locker room.
What it means for Saturday at Miami
Pittsburgh is 5-2 and has lost two straight, both by one score. North Carolina beat the Panthers 21-17 at home, and Boston College won 27-21 last week. Pitt started 5-0 and scored 35 or more points three times, including 59 against both Miami (OH) and Bucknell. In the last two games it has scored 17 and 21 points. The defense has been the steadier unit. It has allowed 115 points in seven games, about 16 per game, and it has held three opponents to 13 or fewer.
