Florida State's Thin Backfield Gets Thinner as Tre Wisner Is Listed Questionable at BC

Florida State starting running back Tre Wisner is questionable for Saturday at Boston College, which leaves an injury-hit backfield with very little depth.

Florida State may go to Boston College on Saturday without its starting running back. Tre Wisner is listed as questionable on the first ACC availability report of the week, and the position was already short of bodies.

Roundtable Sports reported that Wisner and freshman Amari Thomas are the only ball carriers left who have taken handoffs in a game this season. According to SB Nation, Sam Singleton Jr. and Ousmane Kromah are both out for the year. Thomas backed up Wisner against Clemson, and former walk-on Zay Parks was behind him. If Wisner can't play, the likely third back would be Gavin Markey, a walk-on tight end who moved to running back in the offseason. RotoWire said Wisner got hurt in the loss to Clemson, though the injury has not been disclosed, and that he still has a chance to play this week.

Wisner has not been the 1,000-yard back he was for Texas in 2024. Roundtable Sports has him at 247 rushing yards through eight games without a rushing touchdown, and RotoWire puts his all-purpose total at 448 yards. Most of Florida State's ground scoring has come from quarterback Ashton Daniels, who leads the team with 12 of its 18 rushing touchdowns. If the backfield gets thinner, more of the running game will fall on him.

The injury report is only part of a hard week. Florida State Seminoles On SI reported that the program fired head coach Mike Norvell less than a week before the trip, and that Rick Stockstill, the director of scouting, is leading the team, with Tim Harris Jr. and Ernie Sims taking on expanded play-calling roles. Florida State ruled out 12 players on the first report, defensive lineman Cam Brooks and defensive back K.J. Kirkland are also questionable, and receiver Duce Robinson and linebackers Izayia Williams and Daylen Green are among those lost for the season.

What it means at Boston College

The Seminoles are 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the ACC, and they have lost three in a row: 36-24 to Clemson, 43-35 at Miami and 44-20 at Louisville. The defense has allowed at least 36 points in four of the five losses. The two most recent games show the offense can score, but the defense has not been able to hold leads. Road games have been the biggest problem. On SI counts 12 straight losses away from Tallahassee, a program-worst streak. Boston College is 4-4 and 2-3 in league play, and Florida State leads the all-time series 15-6.

Even with all of that, Florida State is favored on this site's board, which tracks 12 venues. Novig has the Seminoles at -233 on the moneyline and Boston College at +223, and the best price on the Eagles is +225 at theScore Bet. Novig has Florida State favored by 6.5 at -108, while BetRivers has the line at -6 for -113. The total is 51.5 at most venues. The posted prices are very close to each other: sportsbook hold runs from 3.3% to 5.9% on the moneyline and up to 6.7% on the spread.

Whatever Wisner's status turns out to be, Florida State will be relying on Daniels and a group of backs with little experience on the road.
