Florida State's coaching search begins after Norvell firing, with Manny Diaz an early name
Florida State fired Mike Norvell on Nov. 1. Duke's Manny Diaz is an early name on the hot board, and a reported $50 million buyout hangs over the search.

Florida State is looking for a new head coach. The school fired Mike Norvell on Sunday, Nov. 1, the day after a 36-24 home loss to Clemson. CBS Sports calls it the fourth Power 4 opening of this cycle and the biggest one so far. It also flags the complication: Norvell is reportedly owed a buyout of about $50 million, which could shape how the Seminoles go about finding his replacement.
The firing ends a run that peaked early and then fell apart. Norvell's teams went a combined 23-4 in 2022 and 2023. Then came 2-10 in 2024, 5-7 last season and a 3-5 start this fall. The Seminoles have lost three straight, and those three teams scored 123 points on them.
One name came up quickly. Noles247, the 247Sports site that covers Florida State, put Duke coach Manny Diaz on its early hot board, CBS Sports reported. Noles247 writer Kolby Crawford filed Diaz under the label "The FSU alum." Diaz grew up in Miami, graduated from Florida State in 1995 and has Duke at 6-2 this season. He went 18-9 in his first two years in Durham, won the 2025 ACC title with an overtime win over Virginia in the championship game, and signed an extension through 2031 in April. He was also 21-15 as Miami's head coach from 2019 to 2021 and spent two seasons as Penn State's defensive coordinator. Noles247 says it has other names on its board, including a coach it describes as a proven program-builder, but it has not named him publicly.
The new contract matters for anyone trying to pry Diaz loose. Florida State would be paying Norvell's buyout while also negotiating with a coach who has just committed long-term to a program that is winning. Diaz's ties to the school make him a natural first name, but the search is only a few days old.
What it means for Boston College
The Seminoles play at Boston College on Saturday, Nov. 7 (ACC Network), their first game since Norvell was let go. The season numbers show why the change happened. Florida State has scored 245 points and allowed 231 over eight games. In its five losses it gave up an average of 40 points. The three wins came against New Mexico State, Central Arkansas and Virginia, the last of them a 38-7 home win before this losing streak. Since then the defense has allowed 44 at Louisville, 43 at No. 3 Miami and 36 to Clemson.
Despite all that, Florida State is still favored on the road. On this site's odds board, which tracks 12 venues, Novig has the Seminoles at -233 on the moneyline and Boston College at +217. The best Boston College price anywhere is +225 at theScore Bet. Florida State is favored by 6.5 points, priced at -106 on Novig. Novig's total is 51.5, with both sides at -102. BetMGM's over sits a point lower, at 50.5 for -118. The gaps between venues are small. Sportsbook hold runs 3.5% to 5.8% on the moneyline and 3.6% to 6.7% on the spread and total.
How this team plays its first week without Norvell will be the first real sign of where the program stands. That answer comes before anyone knows who the next coach is.
