Virginia Tech has won more games than Clemson and scores far more points per game. Even so, the market opened with the Tigers favored for Saturday's ACC game at Memorial Stadium. SB Nation reported the opening FanDuel numbers: Clemson by 2.5 points, Clemson -150 to win outright against Virginia Tech at +125, and a total of 49.5. Bryan Manning of SB Nation credited the Tigers' edge mostly to home field and said the matchup otherwise looks "fairly even."

The line says something about where both programs stand in late October. Virginia Tech is 5-2 and beat Georgia Tech 34-24 last week, which ended a two-game skid. Both of those losses came by a combined seven points, 35-33 to Pittsburgh and 25-20 at California. Clemson is 4-2 and was beaten badly in both of its games against ranked teams: 51-10 at No. 11 LSU in the opener and 41-13 at home against No. 4 Miami. The Tigers' four wins came against Georgia Southern, North Carolina, California and, last Saturday, Charleston Southern, 37-0.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Clemson won the last meeting, 24-14 in November 2024, according to Fox Sports.

What it means for Saturday

The season numbers favor the visitors more than the spread does. Fox Sports has Virginia Tech scoring 37.1 points per game to Clemson's 22.3, and the Hokies average about 114 more passing yards per game. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has thrown for 1,984 yards, and Que'Sean Brown leads the receivers with 616. The two defenses are close in scoring, with Virginia Tech allowing 21.1 points and Clemson 21.5. The clearest gap is up front: the Hokies give up 87.4 rushing yards per game, while Clemson allows 141.5. Clemson's case rests on its home crowd and a defense that has kept most teams outside the top 25 in check. The Tigers also have to show their offense can move the ball against a Power Four opponent with a winning record.

The board for Virginia Tech at Clemson covers 11 venues and has barely moved from the open. Clemson is still favored by 2.5. On Novig, the Tigers are -108 at that number and Virginia Tech is +104. The best Virginia Tech price anywhere is +3.5 at -125 on Hard Rock Bet, an extra point of cushion at a higher cost. The moneyline has tightened since FanDuel's opener. Novig lists Clemson at -133 and Virginia Tech at +130, compared with -150 and +125 on the first FanDuel numbers.

The total is steady at 49.5. Novig has the over at -100 and the under at -108, and the best under available is 50.5 at -110 on theScore Bet. Sportsbook hold ranges from 3.6% to 6.8% on the moneyline, 4.0% to 6.7% on the spread and 4.3% to 7.0% on the total. That works out to a spread of about three percentage points between the cheapest and most expensive venues on each market.

A Virginia Tech win would give the Hokies a 3-2 ACC record and drop Clemson to 2-2 in league play. That would leave the Tigers without a win over a team with a winning record at the season's midpoint.
