Virginia Tech football odds: Hokies 6-2 and +6.5 underdogs at SMU on Friday night
Virginia Tech is 6-2 and bowl eligible. SMU is favored by 6.5 for Friday's game, and the Hokies' playoff hopes now depend on winning in November.

Virginia Tech goes into Friday night at SMU at 6-2 and already bowl eligible, two weeks after a 20-16 win at Clemson. The current price is the one people are searching for: SMU is favored by 6.5 points on most of the market, and the Hokies are +199 on the moneyline at Novig, one of 11 venues on our board. Our Virginia Tech team page is the full guide to the program. This story covers what has changed this week.
Where the Hokies stand
Tech has won two straight, beating Georgia Tech 34-24 at home and then winning at Clemson, after back-to-back losses to Pittsburgh (35-33) and at Cal (25-20). Those two losses came by a combined seven points. They also account for the whole gap between a team in the thick of the ACC race and one that needs help. Against ACC teams the Hokies are 3-2, with wins over Boston College, Georgia Tech and Clemson. Their three nonconference games, against Maryland, Old Dominion and VMI, were all wins, according to ESPN's schedule.
With six wins, a bowl trip is already secured. What's still open is how good a bowl. Every league win from here improves the Hokies' place in the ACC's bowl order, and a third conference loss would probably end any hope of reaching the league title game.
The SMU number
The market sees the Mustangs as clear favorites at home. At Novig, SMU is -203 on the moneyline, which works out to about a two-in-three chance of winning. Virginia Tech's +199 implies roughly one in three. The spread is SMU -6.5 on most of the board. Hard Rock Bet has the best SMU price at -5.5 (-110), and DraftKings has Virginia Tech +6.5 at -110. The total is 56.5 at Novig and 56 at Fanatics, so the market expects plenty of scoring from both teams. The live numbers are on our Virginia Tech at SMU odds page, which refreshes about every ten minutes.
Sportsbook hold on this game ranges from about 4% to 7% depending on the market and the venue. That margin is built into the posted prices, so the same side can pay noticeably different amounts from one venue to the next.
Injury report
The biggest question before kickoff is who is available. Ballance, Terry and Laws have all missed time, and their status on the ACC's availability report will matter more than anything else about this game. A line that has settled at 6.5 already reflects what the market expects about the lineup. If the final report differs from that, the number could move before Friday's kickoff on ESPN.
Playoff and futures picture
The searches for Virginia Tech playoff, ACC championship and national championship odds all come back to one point: two losses with four weeks left leaves the Hokies with almost no room for error. To have an at-large playoff case or a spot in the ACC title game, they likely need to win out, starting in Dallas. The ACC championship route is the more realistic one. That's because the league's top two teams are decided by conference record, and a 3-2 team needs other contenders to lose. A national title remains a very long shot by any measure.
On win totals, the preseason numbers no longer mean much. Tech has six wins, and a win Friday would give it seven with three games left.
