SMU has moved to the front of the race for Brayden Arnold, a four-star athlete from Duncanville, Texas, who projects as a defensive back. On3's Sam Spiegelman reported on Sunday that the Mustangs are now the leader for the Rivals300 prospect. The rest of that report is behind On3's paywall.

This is a reversal from the summer. In July, Arnold told 247Sports that USC was a "very high contender" after the Trojans offered him, and he said he wanted to play in the Big Ten. Sports Illustrated listed his top eight as TCU, USC, Colorado, Penn State, Oregon, SMU, Nebraska and Baylor. SMU was in that group, but plenty of bigger brands were too. For the Mustangs to now be out front says something about how far their in-state recruiting has come since they joined the ACC.

SMU has been working on Arnold for more than a year. His On3 profile shows an unofficial visit to campus in August 2025, and Duncanville is about 11 miles from the Hilltop. That kind of proximity matters for a staff that wants to keep the best Dallas-area defenders at home. ESPN lists him at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, and his recruiting profiles place him in the 2028 class. That leaves a long runway before any decision, and no commitment has been reported. Being the leader in October of his junior season is an advantage, but it doesn't settle anything. Programs like Oregon, Penn State and USC still have time to make up ground.

The timing also helps SMU. Prospects pay attention to winning, and the Mustangs have been doing plenty of it this fall.

What it means for Saturday

SMU is 5-1 and has won three straight: 23-13 over Virginia, 25-16 over Boston College and 34-24 over Missouri State. Its only loss was 41-31 at No. 23 Louisville. The season opened with a 27-24 win at Florida State, followed by a 56-10 rout of UC Davis. The recent wins have been closer than the early-season scores, and the defense has carried more of the load. Over the three-game streak it has allowed 13, 16 and 24 points.

California visits on Saturday, October 24, and the game airs on the CW. SMU is a heavy favorite on this site's Cal at SMU board, which tracks 11 venues. Novig has the Mustangs favored at -809 on the moneyline and Cal at +733. The best Cal price anywhere is +750 at theScore Bet.

The spread shows the widest gap between venues. Novig has SMU favored by 19.5 points at -111. BetRivers has SMU at -17.5 for -109, which is two fewer points to cover at a slightly better price. Novig's total is 53.5, with the over at -111 and the under at -108. Hard Rock Bet is a point higher at 54.5 for the under. Sportsbook hold runs from 3.4% to 5.7% on the moneyline and from 3.9% to 7.0% on the spread.

The markets expect SMU to handle Cal comfortably. A convincing home win the week the Mustangs moved to the front for a local four-star defender would help them make their case to recruits.
