How it was won

The Irish scored on their first possession. Nolan James Jr. ran in from 2 yards at 13:06 of the first quarter, and CJ Carr found Jaden Greathouse for a 3-yard touchdown at 2:55 to make it 14-0.

The second quarter put the game away. Jonaz Walton opened it with a 97-yard touchdown run at 14:48; the extra point failed, leaving it 20-0. Spencer Porath added a 33-yard field goal at 12:27, James scored again from 31 yards at 7:05, and Carr hit Aneyas Williams for a 70-yard touchdown at 3:26. That was 23 points in the quarter and a 37-0 lead at the break.

Carr threw his third touchdown, a 30-yarder to Elijah Burress, at 4:37 of the third quarter, with Micah Drescher now handling the kicks. Stanford got on the board at 2:43 when Davis Warren threw 3 yards to Benji Blackburn, with Emmet Kenney converting. Walton answered with a 40-yard touchdown run at 13:47 of the fourth, and Javian Osborne closed the scoring with a 3-yard run at 3:00.

The box score is as lopsided as the scoreboard:

  • Total yards: Notre Dame 598, Stanford 202
  • Rushing yards: Notre Dame 361, Stanford 58
  • First downs: Notre Dame 26, Stanford 9
  • Third down: Notre Dame 8 of 13, Stanford 2 of 11
  • Turnovers: Notre Dame 0, Stanford 3

Walton led everyone with 181 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, nearly 14 yards a try. James added 73 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Carr was efficient rather than busy: 14 of 20 for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Williams and Burress each made one catch, and each went for a score.

For Stanford, Warren completed 12 of 22 for 144 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Micah Ford ran 13 times for 48 yards. Caden High caught three passes for 64 yards, and Blackburn had three for 27 and the Cardinal's only touchdown.

Against the number

The market closed with Notre Dame favored by 40.5. The Irish won by 51, covering by 10.5 points. They were past the number before halftime and never let it back in range.

The total closed at 55.5, and 65 points went over by 9.5. Notre Dame supplied nearly all of it, getting to 58 on its own; the over needed only Stanford's lone touchdown in the third quarter to land comfortably.
