How Louisville got here

After September, Louisville's season looked shaky. The Cardinals opened with a 41-38 loss to then-No. 9 Ole Miss, then beat Villanova 59-13 and No. 16 SMU 41-31. Next came back-to-back three-point losses: 30-27 at home to Wake Forest and 31-28 at NC State. Two plays the other way in those games, and Louisville would be in a much different place in the standings.

Since then, the offense has carried the team. Louisville beat Florida State 44-20, won 34-26 at Syracuse and beat Stanford 52-24 last Saturday. ESPN's recap credited quarterback Lincoln Kienholz with three total touchdowns against Stanford. 247Sports' CardinalAuthority wrote that Louisville outplayed Stanford after a weak first half. The Cardinals trailed Stanford in the second quarter, and the Louisville athletics box score shows they outscored Stanford 28-7 after halftime.

Louisville has scored at least 27 points in every game this season. That helps explain a total above 60 against a Georgia Tech team that has struggled.

The ACC and playoff picture

ESPN lists Louisville third in the ACC. The conference leader is 5-1 in league play and 7-1 overall, one game ahead of the Cardinals. Only the top two teams in the standings reach the ACC Championship Game. That means Louisville probably can't afford another conference loss, and it may need help from other results too.

For anyone tracking a win total, Louisville needs one more win to reach bowl eligibility, and Saturday is the most favorable spot on the board. With three losses, the Cardinals almost certainly need to win the ACC to get into the College Football Playoff. The conference champion's automatic bid is their clearest path.
