Florida State president asks fans for patience, says nothing on Norvell before Clemson
Richard McCullough asked Florida State fans to fill Doak Campbell Stadium. His letter never mentioned Mike Norvell, and the AD search still hasn't started.

Florida State president Richard McCullough wrote to the Seminoles fan base on Tuesday, asking for its support. The letter left out the one subject most of those fans wanted addressed. It never mentions Mike Norvell by name, and it offers no date for an athletic director search that, six weeks after Michael Alford was fired, still has not started. In his commentary for Roundtable Sports, Micheal Germanese argues the letter misses the mark. In his view, it asks a frustrated fan base to keep paying for a product the administration admits is failing, while holding off the decisions that would show it means to fix it.
According to ESPN, McCullough said the university is reviewing every part of its athletics operation and is close to finishing a definition of the next AD's role, with the search to start "soon." He opened with "I hear you. I understand your frustration," said he shared fans' expectations, and asked them to pack Doak Campbell Stadium for the rest of the season. FootballScoop notes that senior associate AD Bruce Warwick has been interim athletic director since Alford was fired on Sept. 14.
The timing is the core of Germanese's critique. Florida State is 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC despite having one of the most expensive rosters in the country. Norvell is 10-21 since the 2023 conference title, per ESPN, and his teams have not won a road game since November 2023. Roundtable also reports that fans have raised money on GoFundMe to fly a "Fire Norvell" banner over the stadium during the Clemson game. Germanese quotes analyst Andy Staples, who read the letter on X as a plea for fans not to boo while the school has neither hired an AD nor fired its coach. Germanese's case is that asking for patience means little until someone in charge makes a decision.
What it means for Clemson
The next test comes Saturday, Oct. 31, when Florida State hosts Clemson on ACC Network. The Seminoles have now lost two straight on the road, 44-20 at Louisville and 43-35 at No. 3 Miami. Their three wins came against Virginia, Central Arkansas and New Mexico State. They have scored at least 20 points in every game, but the defense has given up 43 or more three times in the last five weeks. The fan mood will be part of the story too: the president's request for a full stadium meets a crowd that has paid for a protest banner.
The market still makes the home team the choice. On this site's board, which tracks 12 venues, Florida State is favored. Novig has the Seminoles at -203 on the moneyline and Clemson at +199. Novig's spread is Florida State -6.5 at +104. The best Florida State spread price elsewhere is -5.5 at -105 at theScore Bet, a full point better for anyone taking the Seminoles. Novig sets the total at 49.5, while theScore Bet's under sits a point higher at 50.5. Hold at the sportsbooks runs from 3.3% to 6.5% on the moneyline, so prices for the same outcome vary noticeably from venue to venue.
Whatever happens Saturday, the letter has made one thing clear: no decision on Norvell is coming yet.
