Florida State and Clemson Meet With Norvell's Seven-Win Math and Swinney's Standing on the Line

Florida State is 3-4 and opens its last five games against 4-3 Clemson on Saturday, with pressure on both Mike Norvell and Dabo Swinney.

Florida State comes out of its bye week at 3-4 with five games left, and the first of them, Saturday's home game against Clemson, could decide a lot about Mike Norvell's future. Roundtable Sports reports that seven wins has been floated as the number Norvell may need to keep his job for 2027. To get there, the Seminoles have to win four of their last five, so a loss to the Tigers would leave them needing to win out.

After Clemson, the schedule sends Florida State on the road to Boston College and Pitt, its first back-to-back road trip of the season, before it closes at home against NC State and Florida. Roundtable Sports also questioned whether Norvell has moved on from the 43-35 loss at Miami. He has kept talking about two late calls in that game, and Newsweek reported that he called ACC officiating supervisor Gary Patterson about them. On Monday, Norvell said such calls "can be life-changers," according to Roundtable Sports.

The pressure is not only on the home sideline. Dabo Swinney, who has won two national titles at Clemson, is fielding questions about where the program is headed. The Tigers are 4-3 after a 20-16 home loss to Virginia Tech, and they have not looked like the team that used to run the conference.

What it means for Saturday

The two teams bring nearly opposite profiles. Florida State has scored at least 20 points in every game and averages 31.6, but it has allowed 43 or more in three of its four losses. Clemson's offense has reached 30 only once, in a 37-0 win over Charleston Southern. Its defense has carried the team, holding North Carolina, Georgia Southern and California to 20 points or fewer. The Tigers' losses to ranked opponents have been lopsided, though: 51-10 at LSU and 41-13 against Miami. Miami is the one common opponent, and Florida State lost to the Hurricanes by eight while Clemson lost by 28.

The Roundtable Sports numbers point the same way. Clemson ranks 111th nationally in scoring and 115th in total offense. Florida State's defense ranks 129th in yards allowed. The Seminoles will also be without running back Ousmane Kromah, who is out for the season.

On this site's board, which tracks 12 venues, Florida State is favored. Novig lists the Seminoles at -212 on the moneyline, and the best price anywhere is -209 at Polymarket, so the venues are close on the winner. Clemson is +199 at Novig. The point spread varies more. Novig has Florida State -6.5 at +104, while BetMGM has the Seminoles at -5.5 for -110, the number Roundtable Sports cited. The total is 49.5 at Novig, with the Over at -111 and the Under at -106. Pinnacle prices the Over at 49.5 for -109, and FanDuel's Under sits a point higher at 50.5. Sportsbook hold across the market runs from about 3.7% to 6.9%.

The game airs on ACC Network. A Florida State win keeps Norvell's path to seven open. A Clemson win would ease some of the pressure on Swinney and leave Norvell needing four straight wins to finish the season.
