Clemson Gets 64% Edge Over Virginia Tech in Simulation Ahead of Saturday Night
A simulation model gives Clemson a 64% chance to beat Virginia Tech and projects a 29-23 score. The Tigers are favored by 2.5 points at Memorial Stadium.

A simulation model now gives Clemson a firmer edge over Virginia Tech than it did at the start of October. Versus Sports Simulator puts the Tigers' chance of winning Saturday night's game at Memorial Stadium at 64%, with an average projected score of about 29-23, Clemson Tigers On SI reported. When the month began, the same model had Clemson at only 53%.
Most of that change came from Virginia Tech's two straight losses earlier in October, which were decided by a combined seven points. The Hokies lost 35-33 at home to Pittsburgh and 25-20 at California before getting back on track with a 34-24 win over Georgia Tech last week. Home field matters too. According to the outlet, the model would still favor Clemson at Lane Stadium, but only at 52%.
The model's grades help explain how it sees the game. It gives Clemson's defense a B+ and its offense a B-, which fits a team that has won by holding opponents down while scoring in bursts. Virginia Tech gets a C+ overall, and its offense is its best unit at B-. Its defense is also graded C+, but that rating undersells one part of it. In a separate preview, Clemson Tigers On SI noted that the Hokies lead the country with 64 tackles for loss and lead the ACC with 22 sacks and 10 forced fumbles. Clemson has given up 17 sacks in six games while protecting freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds. ESPN Analytics is more cautious than the simulator and gives Clemson a 55.9% chance to win.
The game is also the first time Dabo Swinney has faced James Franklin since Franklin left Penn State to take over the Hokies. Clemson Tigers On SI framed it as a game with ACC title stakes for both teams, with the loser likely falling out of contention.
What it means for Saturday
The season records explain the model's lean but also show why it isn't stronger. Clemson is 4-2, and both losses came against top-15 teams by wide margins: 51-10 at LSU and 41-13 against Miami. Its four wins have come by an average of about 20 points. Virginia Tech is 5-2. The teams have one common opponent: Clemson won 24-10 at California, and the Hokies lost there by five. The projected 29 points would be more than Clemson has scored against any Power Four opponent this season. Its high so far is 28 against North Carolina.
The board for this game agrees with the model on the winner but expects a closer game. Clemson is favored by 2.5 points across 11 venues. On Novig, Clemson -2.5 is priced at -104 and Virginia Tech +2.5 at -100. The best Hokies number anywhere is +3 at -112 on BetMGM. On the moneyline, Novig has Clemson at -130 and Virginia Tech at +127. The total is 48.5 on Novig, with the over at -106 and the under at even money, while FanDuel offers the highest under number at 49.5 for -110. The model's 29-23 average implies a six-point margin and 52 total points, so it sits above the market on both the spread and the total.
The gaps between venues are modest. Sportsbook hold runs from 2.9% to 6.4% on the moneyline and from 3.5% to 6.6% on the spread. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN.
